Fang Force #25 – “Shell Shock: The Indestructible Foe” (Part 1)

Lord Nihilex stared at the wall opposing his throne. Its blackness seethed and drank the wind through the passageways. Its thirst was eternal; such was the nature of the Abyssal Realm – desperate for substance, all consuming; so desperate that it churned creatures from nothingness to act on its accord.

The void was known by all. Those with young imaginations often stared into it when the light left them. What monstrous conjurings they projected onto that canvas took form at the portal gates, the shape of which he could never predict. So far, however, all had failed to serve their purpose.

Both he and the Abyss stared without eyes, daring the other to blink. How deep did the darkness run inside the shadow conqueror’s chest? Deeper, he thought, than the farthest corners of the realm. He growled, casting his thoughts further, until…

“Bah!”

His goblet clunked against the stone, staining it with drink. Feareus and Vultera stumbled to retrieve the cup, bickering over which of them would hold it and fill it.

“What a pathetic display,” Lord Nihilex sneered. Continue reading “Fang Force #25 – “Shell Shock: The Indestructible Foe” (Part 1)”

Glimmer Girl + Fang Force – Shine Eternal (Part 7)

I woke in a strange bed, staring up at wooden beams. It wasn’t until moments later that I remembered where I was, or who I was with, or why my chest ached. What I couldn’t explain was where the top half of my costume had gone, or why I was wearing a nightshirt. Realisation filled me with horror.

The little purple bat flew over the curtain as Tanya and Lindsay entered. They smiled and bent down at my bedside. Spike perched on top of Tanya, making a tiny nest in her coif of short hair.

“How long…” The words ached and my throat was dry. Lindsay pulled a jug from the bedside table, and filled a glass.

“Don’t try to speak,” she said. “You were nearly a goner.”

I accepted the drink – gods, it was the best water I’d ever tasted – and wiped the dry flakes from my lips. In place of words I gestured to the shirt. Continue reading “Glimmer Girl + Fang Force – Shine Eternal (Part 7)”

Glimmer Girl + Fang Force – Shine Eternal (Part 3)

Here’s a Glimmer Girl factoid: my holographic eyes can perceive the entire light spectrum. That means I can see what is visible to other humans and a whole lot more; gamma radiation, infrared, microwaves, you name it. And it’s everywhere. Looking up at the night sky as Glimmer Girl reveals a cosmic rainbow few others experience.

In this place, however, there was nothing. Past the heat of Lindsay’s body was an endless void, stretching forever without horizon. There was ground beneath our feet, but it was devoid of any kind of warmth. Whatever this cursed landscape, it was as far from Earth as it was from Heaven or Hell.

Lindsay took my hand. “Are you okay?”

No answer was forthcoming. My gut screamed that this place was wrong. No human, or even a pseudo-vampire like Lindsay, was meant for this world.

“Where are we?”

She peered into the nothingness. “At a guess, the last place anyone would want to go.” Continue reading “Glimmer Girl + Fang Force – Shine Eternal (Part 3)”

The next part of the journey was on foot. Fang Force trudged through the tall grass with myself in tow, and eventually passed through the hillside forest. The ground was soft and uneven; too dangerous for most to scale. Gods, even I was tempted to fly over it.

It must have been an hour since Red Fang last spoke. I breathed a sigh of relief when she broke the silence. “The entrance to Lord Nihilex’s lair is just over the next clearing,” she said.

“Let’s hope the fight’s not too easy,” I said. All bravado, of course.

A single ray of light is all it takes to dispel darkness,” Yellow Fang said.

Pink Fang hummed. “And you have light to spare, don’t you, Glimmer Girl?

Of that there was no doubt.

We descended into a gully and stopped at the base of a plateau. Why there? There was nothing remarkable about the rock surrounding us. Already I was on edge. It was the perfect staging ground for an ambush. Thank the gods Fang Force were there.  Continue reading “Glimmer Girl + Fang Force – Shine Eternal (Part 2)”

Fang Force #24 – “All Hail: The Fang Empress Realized” (Part 6)

Lindsay lifted her head from the console. Everything beyond the crack in her visor was a blur. Her head swam on her shoulders, and the metallic taste in her mouth spelled something she didn’t want to think about. Still, she endured.

Through the haze there were voices; voices that she knew but couldn’t put names to.

There’s too many of them!

I can take a few. I just need a clear shot.

Everybody stay calm. Cooler heads will prevail.

What about Lindsay? Lindsay, are you there?

The sound of her name was the anchor she needed. Red Fang shook her head and was back in the pilot’s seat of her familiar. She winced through the agony of crashing to earth.

I’m here,” she said, wearily. “I… what happened?

Every thought to pass through her head did with the consistency of concrete. How tempting it was to lay back on the panel and sleep again. Continue reading “Fang Force #24 – “All Hail: The Fang Empress Realized” (Part 6)”

As time drew further, so did the depths of Lord Nihilex’s power. The abstract doorway to the Abyssal Realm grew as well, and doing so gave ‘Wiseman’ substantial energies to work with. For eons he’d but morsels to work with, but that had changed. Though he’d yet to reach his peak, he was still able to push the boundaries of what they’d accomplished this far.

Fingers the age of dust raked the aura of the crystal ball, shifting the flow from the orange spectrum and into a poisonous, algae-tinged green. With words older than words he commanded those powers outward, and to the target set in the eye of the prism.

The glassy vision presented the image of Chorack crawling from the bushes and brushing the dirt from his shell. He did not expect to be the subject of Wiseman’s machinations, nor did he understand the supernatural force pouring through his body. His hands inflated and his thoax bloated.

“I don’t feel so good,” he clicked.

Wiseman continued his conjurings, pulling dark mass from the Abyssal Realm, and channeling it into the monster’s body. He watched through the eye as the creature quantified; his stance widened, and his height shot in line with the treetops.

“W-what’s happening to me!” Continue reading “Fang Force #23 – “All Hail: The Fang Empress Realized” (Part 5)”

It was Lindsay’s worst nightmare realized. She feared, not for herself, but for those in her group; innocent tourists seeking a harmless fright, not a real one! Her life with Fang Force crossing into theirs was something she would never forgive the monster for.

Chorack stalked the tour group like a wolf does a flock, herding them to a corner. Their fear was palpable, like the air waiting to be devoured. How vulnerable they were, just waiting to be picked off.

“Which one of you will scream the loudest?” he said. His options were myriad. Would it be the little old woman, or the nerdy one with glasses? The short one with the curly hair seemed a good choice, and was shivering in her heels.

Lindsay roared and tackled the giant cockroach. She did so with animal force, roaring like something from the wilds. A collective gasp escaped the group when she lifted a sword high; a sword lifted from a nearby coat of arms decorating the wall.

“You don’t get to harm these people,” she seethed. “This is my tour group, and they are under my protection!” Continue reading “Fang Force #22 – “All Hail: The Fang Empress Realized” (Part 4)”

Fang Force #19 – “All Hail: The Fang Empress Realized” (Part 1)

“Fang Force is at full strength,” Lord Nihilex lamented. “Even without the Great Vampire King, they are five united, and with their unstoppable familiar combat machines at the ready!”

His voice more than echoed in the dark; it was an extension of it, so that every word drilled into the ears of those who dwelled there. Not least of all was Fantom, his warrior step-son with a mask covering half his absent face.

“We’ve been cocky,” the younger monster mused. “It isn’t enough to simply throw our weight around, hoping for the best. Defeating Fang Force will require all our cunning.”

“Who asked you?” the shadow conqueror roared, and unleashed a wave of dark energy to plunge deep into his chest.

Such attacks were becoming customary, and left Fantom writhing. Some days he wondered why he spoke at all; but then he realised that to be silent was to give himself completely to his step-father’s wishes. His mother, Queen Lacuna, would have long age interjected were she awake to see such a display. Continue reading “Fang Force #19 – “All Hail: The Fang Empress Realized” (Part 1)”

Fang Force #18.5 – “A Bold New Direction” (April Fools!)

Sitting at the side of Queen Lacuna, Lord Nihilex hadn’t looked away from her sleeping form since his children left. Had he expected too much of them? Perhaps, but what other choice did he have? He couldn’t allow Fantom to live after what he’d done, bringing the scion in without killing her. He thought his children could manage, but cursed himself at Fearus sobbed like a whimpering human.

Hours passed with his thoughts lingering between that of the children and the queen. Eventually something that would normally never be allowed happened; a freakling opened the door to the chamber. It was met with destruction so fast that it may not have noticed before falling into dust.

“You may enter, Wiseman,” Nihilex growled, “but keep quiet. Should you disturb her rest you will meet the same fate as the messenger.” Continue reading “Fang Force #18.5 – “A Bold New Direction” (April Fools!)”

Fang Force #18 – “Bitter Return: A Fang Force Divided” (Part 6)

When Feareus and Vultera returned to their underground home it was not with their heads held high, nor was it with the expectation that they would walk away in good health. They marched like prisoners to the gallows to the steps of their father’s throne, where Lord Nihilex sat spread legged, chin resting in his palm, tapping an impatient finger.

The two bowed until their noses kissed bedrock, and trembled. Punishment was coming, they knew it. Brother and sister shrunk as much as they could, as to invite the pain would end the ordeal sooner.

Lord Nihilex hummed. “You had victory in the palm of your hand,” he said. “All you had to do was still your tongues long enough for Fang Force to eat itself, and now look!”

To one side stood his mage, a skeleton shrouded in rags, combing his hands over a crystal ball. Through it projected the image of Fang Force in technicolor, tearing through the shadow conquerors unliving army like so many toy soldiers.
